Meteorologist Art Horn’s weather lessons. All the weather your students need in just one hour from a real meteorologist!

My name is Art Horn. I am an Emmy nominated meteorologist with three decades of TV experience with NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS. Most recently I was with NBC 30 in Connecticut. I have presented my weather program to students all across southern New England for 18 years.

My programs stress the importance of math and the scientific method as tools to understand the world around us.

“How the Weather Works”
My weather programs have been updated to meet the new science standards. In my 60 minute powerpoint show I start with the earth’s relationship to the sun and the making of the seasons. From there I address global temperature and what makes storms and winds such as jetstreams. Next is water in its three states and how that relates to weather. I talk about air density, air pressure and winds around highs and lows. From there I go to water vapor, convection and the formation of clouds. I go into detail about how the atmospheres ability to hold water depends on temperature. I explain what the dewpoint temperature is and how it helps us determine how much moisture is in the atmosphere. I explain how precipitation is made. I demonstrate how the change in temperature from the ground up is very important as to what type of precipitation will fall, snow, sleet or freezing rain. From there we go on to fronts, thunderstorms and lightning, hail, flash floods, microbursts and tornadoes. Then we move to hurricanes and how they form what damage they can do. I explain the 5 different categories of hurricanes and many other aspects of these mighty storms. El Nino and La Nina are important ocean forces that affect the atmosphere and I explain these in detail. At the end I show the students how a television weather forecast is put on the air. I adapt the program for different grade levels with my narration. Finally I attempt to answer all questions from the students as time permits.

“The Wonders of Weather" Second grade and under.
I start the show with pictures of dry places, wet places cold places and hot places around the world. I talk about what a desert is and why some are cold and some are hot. I show pictures of the North and South poles. Then I show pictures of snowflakes and the many different types we find in nature. I have pictures of snow and glaciers as well. Ice storms do a great deal of damage and I expose the students to dramatic pictures of these infrequent storms. Floods, droughts and lightning are next. Thunderstorms make hail and tornadoes and I have some amazing pictures of these storms and how much damage they can cause. Hurricanes are the biggest storms on earth and I have pictures of them along with information about how and where they form. The next section is about wind, what makes it and what it can do. From there I show images of the many different types of clouds we have in weather. In the end I show pictures of rainbows and sunrises and sunsets. All in all it's a wide ranging look at our amazing weather! After the program I take as many questions as time permits.

New this year “The Weather of The Planets” Third Grade and up.
This program will explore the weather of all the planets in our solar system. We will start with the driver of the weather, the sun. From there we will board our imaginary star ship. We will travel to each planet as we go farther and farther from the sun and deeper into the cold outer reaches of Solar System. Actually some of the many moons of the planets have some fascinating weather and we will land on them as well. The one hour program will also examine where we live in the vast Milky Way Galaxy and take a look at other galaxies in the universe. This program will give your students an astronomy lesson and a weather lesson at the same time! After the program I answer as many questions as possible.

The cost is $250.00 for one weather lesson, $350.00 for two sessions on the same day.

I will need a screen and a small table for my DLP projector, that’s it!
